The Truth

I read several articles over the internet and I found out that some of them aren't true.

I went to MPH Bookstore in Mid Valley, bought some book there and read through them, and I found out that some information in that book aren't true.

I read about the some scientific findings and I found out that that is not the actual findings.

I read the newspaper about some things that happened but to an actress, but when they approached the actress, she said "No, I didn't", although the newspaper said "Yes, she did".

I saw something small happened, but the newspaper exaggerated the real things until it looks like something big happened.

I watched Leverage and I think, what if someone that I encounter today is just something that was set up by someone?

So I tried to think what if the things that we see, the things that happened, the things that is published by books, newspaper and etc, is not the truth?

What If....

I've been thinking about this for a while.....

What if there are mistakes done during the past?

What if the true answer for 1+1 is 3?

What if the mathematicians during the past made an error that we didn't realized?

What if because of all this mistakes we can't achieve the advance technology that we dream of?

I don't know where to find the answer for all of this stupid question. But one day I sure will.

Selamat Tahun Baru

Hope this 1431 H will provide us a great journey and adventure to Heaven.

A Short Story

Salam/Hi,

PLS PATIENTLY READ THRU THIS PASSAGE.

Qur'an 3:104: Let there arise amongst you a band of people inviting to all that is good and right, and forbidding the wrong. Such are the successful ones...

Qur'an 16:125: Invite to the way of your Lord with beautiful preaching and in the best ways...

Every Friday afternoon, after the Jumat service at the Central Mosque (and shortly after Al-Usrah program), the Imam and his eleven year old son would go out into their town and hand out "PATH TO PARADISE" and other Islamic literature. This particular and fortunate Friday afternoon, as the time came for the Imam and his son to go to the streets with their booklets, it was very cold outside, as well as pouring rain.

The boy bundled up in his warmest and driest clothes and said, 'OK, dad, I'm ready!'

His 'Mallam' dad asked, 'Ready for what?'

'Dad, it's time we gather our tracts together and go out.'

Dad responds, 'Son, it's very cold outside and it's pouring rain.'

The boy gives his dad a surprised look, asking, 'But Dad, aren't people still going to hell, even though it's raining?'

Dad answers, 'Son, I am not going out in this weather.'

Despondently, the boy asks, 'Dad, can I go? Please?'

His father hesitated for a moment then said, 'Son, you can go. Here are the booklets. Be careful son.'

'Thanks, Dad!'

And with that, he was off and out into the rain. This eleven year old boy walked the streets of the town going door to door and handing everybody he met in the street a pamphlet or a booklet.

After two hours of walking in the rain, he was soaking, bone-chilled wet and down to his VERY LAST BOOKLET.

He stopped on a corner and looked for someone to hand a booklet to, but the streets were totally deserted.

Then he turned toward the first home he saw and started up the sidewalk to the front door and rang the door bell. He rang the bell, but nobody answered..

He rang it again and again, but still no one answered.

He waited but still no answer.

Finally, this eleven year old da'wah-expert turned to leave, but something stopped him.

Again, he turned to the door and rang the bell and knocked loudly on the door with his fist. He waited, something holding him there on the front porch!

He rang again and this time the door slowly opened. Standing in the doorway was a very sad-looking elderly lady.

She softly asked, 'What can I do for you, son?'

With radiant eyes and a smile that lit up her world, this little boy said, 'Ma'am, I'm sorry if I disturbed you, but I just want to tell you that "ALLAH REALLY LOVES AND CARES FOR YOU" and I came to give you my very last booklet which will tell you all about God, the real purpose of creation, and how to achieve His pleasure.'

With that, he handed her his last booklet and turned to leave. She called to him as he departed. 'Thank you, son! And God Bless You!'

Well, the following Friday afternoon after Jumat service (during which period they hold a weekly program, Al-Usrah) the Imam was giving some lectures.

As he concludes the lectures, he asked, 'Does anybody have questions or want to say anything?' Slowly, in the back row among the ladies, an elderly voice was heard over the speaker. As the voice went on, a hint of glorious gaiety and contentment was plainly evident in it even though the wasn't to be seen,

'No one in this gathering knows me. I've never been here before. You see, before last Friday I was not a Muslim, and thought I could be. My husband passed on some time ago, leaving me totally alone in this world. Last Friday, being a particularly cold and rainy day, it was even more so in my heart that I came to the end of the line where I no longer had any hope or will to live. So I took a rope and a chair and ascended the stairway into the attic of my home. I fastened the rope securely to a rafter in the roof then stood on the chair and fastened the other end of the rope around my neck. Standing on that chair, so lonely and broken-hearted I was about to leap off, when suddenly the loud ringing of my doorbell downstairs startled me. I thought, "I'll wait a minute, and whoever it is will go away." I waited and waited, but the ringing doorbell seemed to get louder and more insistent, and then the person ringing also started knocking loudly.... I thought to myself again, 'Who on earth could this be? Nobody ever rings my bell or comes to see me.' I loosened the rope from my neck and started for the front door, all the while the bell rang louder and louder. When I opened the door and looked I could hardly believe my eyes, for there on my front porch was the most radiant and angelic little boy I had ever seen in my life. His SMILE, oh, I could never describe it to you!
The words that came from his mouth caused my heart that had long been dead TO LEAP TO LIFE as he exclaimed with a cherub-like voice, 'Ma'am, I just came to tell you that ALLAH REALLY LOVES AND CARES FOR YOU!' Then he gave me this booklet, "Path To Paradise" that I now hold in my hand. As the little angel disappeared back out into the cold and rain, I closed my door and read slowly every word of this book. Then I went up to my attic to get my rope and chair. I wouldn't be needing them any more. You see? I am now a Happy Vicegerent of the One True God. Since the address of your congregation was stamped on the back of this booklet, I have come here to personally say THANK YOU to God's little angel who came just in the nick of time and by so doing, spared my soul from an eternity in hell.'

There was not a dry eye in the mosque. And as shouts of TAKBIR!!! ALLAH AKBAR!!! rented the air, even among the ladies, despite themselves.

Imam-Dad descended from the pulpit to the front row where the little angel was seated.... He took his son in his arms and sobbed uncontrollably. Probably no jama'at has had a more glorious moment, and probably this universe has never seen a Papa that was more filled with love and honor for his son... Except for One. This very one...Blessed are your eyes for reading this message.

Heaven is for His people! Remember, God's message CAN make the difference in the life of someone close to you. Please share this wonderful message (and of course anyone I've sent or will send)... If you love ALLAH, please forward this message. Spread His Word, help his and you'll see his hand in everything you do...

DEATH

Hi / Salam to everyone.

I was browsing some of my old picture this morning and I found that I do have the picture taken when my friend was dying in the hospital. Well, she’s dead now but I was wondering, what will my death looks like? Am I gonna die with respect and honor, or am I gonna die with shame and regrets? Will it be painful or painless? Since I feel kind of weird thinking this way, I opened my internet browser and key in the word “Death”. I don’t want to tell you what I found but I think that death is probably viewed in two ways, from the physics and metaphysics part, or the science part, and the religious part.

If we view death from the science part, we will almost certainly say that death is the end of every living organism. Well, it is true that death is the end of every living organism. For human, death can be defined as the incapability of the heart and brain to maintain and regulate body condition. In other words, death occurs when your heart and your brain can no longer be used. Science also explained that when human died, they are simply turning from one form of energy to another. If science is true, that means humans are actually a bunch of energy that will be used by another living organism. What happened to human’s right in nature? Well, that is not a big question yet, here is the big question. What will happen after we died?

Since we can’t give the answer unless we are dead or having some kind of ability to be in both death world and real world, I think this is where religions play their role. In most religion, they believe in life after death. Means there will be heaven and hell. Some of the religions believe that we will be born again according to how we lived in the past. In Islam, whenever a person died, they will be questioned about their deeds during their life time and base on the answer, you will either be in heaven or hell. In Hinduism, they believe that human will be born again but according to their deeds, they will be born as human, or animal or any other forms of living organism. Here’s the question again, what proves do you have to support your argument?

In my view, I conclude death as the natural processes. We can’t run from them and waiting is just a waste of time. And since I don’t know what will happen in after life, I will just let it be until death knocks my door and give the answer. So, I might as well enjoy the very precious moment that I have right now, and remember to bear in mind that death is close to us.
That’s all from me, thank you for reading this post.

Euthanasia - Good Or Bad?

Hi and salam to everyone.

I was just finished watching House season 6 and I found something that has been one of the world's biggest issue nowadays. In the series, Wilson help his patient who has terminal cancer to die by giving him an extreme amount of morphine (if I'm not mistaken). Wilson said that the morphine will help the patient to relieve his pain. With the feeling of guilt, Wilson and House together with Cuddy go to a medical conference. In that conference, Wilson is trying to deliver his paper about euthanasia, before House drugged him and take out all of his pants (I like this House, haha). The question here is not about House, it's about what Wilson is doing. Do we consider the act as good or bad?

I googled the word 'euthanasia' and I found some really good articles about it. Euthanasia, is derived from the word "eu" and "thanatos" in Greek which means good and death respectively. The actual meaning of this word is the act of killing someone painlessly. Now, this act is bound by some factors before it can be classified as good and bad. First, ethics. Second, religions and last one is facts. Now, back on House, if you are really House's fans, I think you know that there is one time where House did this thing. I don't remember which seasons and episode, but in that series, House was asked to treat a researcher, in which he was diagnosed for terminal cancer at the end (if i'm not mistaken, again). He said to House he just want to die without suffering too much pain. House said he still has some times left before he died but on the next day, Cuddy said that during the night, everything when fine before the researcher's heart suddenly stop, and she asked whether House was involved in the event or not. House said no, but everyone knows how much of a liar House is.

Enough about House. I am sure that Euthanasia is consider bad thing if we go with ethics. Yeah, ethics is a system of principles governing the morality and acceptable conduct. Euthanasia simply means you have to kill someone, just without the pain. Ethics wouldn't allow us to do so because the killing part is unacceptable conduct. Although if the patient itself ask for euthanasia, people with ethics will think that they can't just take another person's life, although we are doing the person's favour. What the hell? This is my life, so it's up to me what am i going to do with it. That's maybe some of the stubborn old man phrase so that they will get to die easily.

Next, religions. In many religions, they said that life is sacred. It is a gift from God and only He can take it back. In Islam, there are phrase saying that suicide is strictly prohibited. Those who commited suicide will never enter the paradise. If we go with religion, they will say that euthanasia is prohibited, it is not because the act of killing, but the act of suiciding. They tend to believe that pain and suffer are things that is given by God to punish human for their sins or just to test their believe in their religion before they can gain the reward in hereafter. So by suiciding, you shorten the time needed for your punishment and this shows that you do not have enough faith in your religion and thus, will not receive any reward in hereafter. That is why religious people forbid us from performing euthanasia

The last one is facts. When a person is suffering from a terminal illness, the facts that they know are they gonna die soon. Or let say someone got into accident, and suffer terrible injury in their head. Lost their consciousness and now are using life support machine because their brain cannot do the job. In this case, we know that the person is already dead, so putting him on the life support machine will only cause an increase in the medical bill that they need to pay later on. So, they decided to stop using the life support machine and the person is pronounced dead. In this situation, the euthanasia is acceptable, because of the fact that the person has no chance of survival, and because of the fact that they need to pay more if he/she stays longer with the life support machine.

From this three factors, I decided to came up with my own thinking. Euthanasia can only be done if the person's brain can no longer be used. That means, the person is unable to think or gain consciousness. Why is it so? Because if you only have terminal cancer, your brain can still functioning despite of the pain that you feel. So, you can think of something and search for the cure by thinking process. We know that for every ilnesses, there must be a cure. Without thinking, we may not be able to know what the cure is, so by using your functional brain, you need to think of that cure. Give up means you're dead. If the person can no longer use his or her brain, that means he/she cannot think anymore. So it is good for us to just let they died because losing your brain is just the same as losing your whole body parts.

Before I end up this post, I just want to ask you a question. Especially if you are a doctor. Will you allow yourself to perform this act? Think first before you answer it. Thank you for your time and may this post help you in any ways of helping.

Human Make Mistakes

Hi and salam to everyone.

First of all I would like to apologize for not updating this blog in the past few weeks. I need to prepare myself for final exam which had just finished an hour before I write this post. For the past few weeks also, I've been thinking about what will happen if my result is not as good as it always be? I said to myself, well, nobody's gonna scold you because nobody dare. But I then ask myself again, the outcome of this final exam is clear, I will not be able to obtain the dean list title. What has happened?

Then I realize something that I should have done sooner. I made a mistake. The mistake's affecting me in the way that I don't realize it. Because I thought that it was just another habit of me. But yeah, let bygones be bygones. We can't change the past, but from the past we can shape the future. That is what I'm thinking about right now.

Speaking about mistakes, I recently read a newspaper, Harian Metro to be exact, and I saw a title about a teenager who lost her foot due to mistake made by the practical doctor who treated her. I read through the news and I think it was clearly the doctor's fault because of misdiagnosed her condition. I ask my friend who' s a medic student about her opinion. She said two things. First, we don't know the true story as we only read it in the newspaper. Second is the thing had already happened. What interested me is when she said this, "We are human. Human is bound to make mistakes."

I guess you might want to know why am I interested in that phrase. My argument is yes, human make mistakes. But some mistakes cannot be tolerant. Because the mistake is affecting other people's felicity. If doctor make mistakes, patient died. If an engineer make mistakes, the project might not work out and he/she will be fired, if a leader make mistakes, the follower will not trust him and what he lead will fall down, if a normal person make mistake by killing other people, he will received the title criminal in which will turn him into one later on. The big question is, how will we avoid from making any mistakes? Knowing that human WILL always make some mistakes?.

I'm sorry to disappoint you but we can't avoid mistakes. Well, it is part of life though. But one thing for certain that we can do is how to deal with the mistakes. People usually do not realize their mistakes, and this is again, a mistakes. I am pretty confident about the fact that people will only see mistakes on others but did not find one in theirselves. Many of the great motivators use this phrase to explain about human mistakes. But, how can one find a mistakes in his or herself? Only when the mistake is showing it's effect, then will they realize it. But at that moment of time, they are too late. So, what I thought was getting the upper hand is always the better way to deal with our mistakes.

Again question, how can we get the upper hand? This one is easy. By thinking process. Henry Ford said that thinking is the hardest process for human, that is why only a few engage with it. If you think thoroughly, I am sure you are able to handle the mistakes correctly. I can give you example but I know you can think it of yourself, IF, you think. Bear in mind that life is full with choices. Right choices are the most favourable but wrong choices coloured our life and teach us something useful. Just make sure you be prepared to face the mistakes you have done, and don't run from them. A few advice, whatever you do,make sure your mistake doesn't involve other people's felicity. Because if it is, then you are in trouble and miserable.

I think that is all I need to say. Thank you for your time reading this post. Let us pray and hope that this will help you direct or indirectly. Thank you.

History Behind Mathematics

This will just be a quick update. I got something to settle down this month. Exam is also around the corner, so I hope you can keep waiting for something useful from this blog.

Below are something that we don't know about mathematics.

  1. Pi is mathematical symbol that gives the value approximately 3.14159. The value for pi is actually the ratio between the circumference and the radius in Euclidean Space.
  2. The most ancient mathematical texts available are Plimpton 322, which is believed to come from Babylonian Mathematics, 1900 years before century
  3. The natural logarithm e is called Euler's number, after the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler
  4. The tangent function (tan) was found by Islamic scholar, Muhammad Ibn Musa Al Khawarizmi
  5. The term "angle" was a Latin word meaning the corner

I think that is it for my short update. Right now I am also searching for the right material or topic to be discuss. So if you have something valuable, do contact me. Thank you

Melawan Sistem Manusia

"How about the other 5%?" kata Dr. House. "Well, they have to follow the 95%" balas pegawai tersebut.

Sekian.

10 Things You Don't Know

Below are the 20 things that I think you don't know. If you do know something, congratulations, you can be categorized as someone who loves knowledge.

  1. Stromatolites, a type of algae is the one that is responsible for the extinction of dinosour, not asteroids or natural disaster as stated in many articles or science fictions.
  2. Moon can produces its own water. The moon act as big sponges that trapped the electrically charged particles using the irregular dust grains name regolith. When this happen, the charged particles react with the proton inside the regolith to produce hydroxyl and water.
  3. Body postures (how you sit, walk, talk, etc) can affects the confidence on your thoughts. The one who sit up straight while writing their job qualification has more confidence than the one who slumped over their desk to just to write the same thing.
  4. The lower paterial lobe for einstein is 15% more then the average adult. That's why he is so genius.
  5. Most of us know dinosaur extinct 65 million years ago. But that period is called the cretaceous period, not the jurassic period.
  6. To build a map, you need to have the basic map (contour map). 3 simple things to do while mapping are sketching the overall outcrops, structural mapping and detail sedimentary structure.
  7. The letter "c" in the Einstein most famous equation and also the symbol for light, stands for celeritas, which means swift or speed.
  8. Blue rose is now successfully created in Japan. This creation is expected to change the rose meaning from love to something else.
  9. A black hole was found to be in the center of a galaxy. An artificial black hole has been created by chinese scientists using the metamaterial (material that cannot be seen by nature)
  10. Marie Curie, the famous female scientist who found the polonium and radium, died because of aplastic anaemia.

Why Can't We?

How would you like your coffee, sir? With sugar or with milk?". Beliau menjawab, "Why can't I have both?", sebelum rakan-rakannya mentertawakannya (Pada zaman ini kopi hanya diminum bersama gula atau bersama susu). Itupun jika anda mahu berfikir kerana menurut Henry Ford, "Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason so few engage in it".

Sekian buat entri kali ini, terima kasih kerana membaca.

Male Vs Female

Differences in Male and Female

For some reason, human had always compared themselves with others since a long time ago. They always wanted to prove that they are better. The same goes with the debate on which one is better, man or woman? Well, my answer is none, because we are all the same, except there are slight differences in our nature.

There are 3 obvious things that differentiate man with woman. They are physical structure, reproductive organ and the last one is how they think. Since physical structure and reproductive organ are easy to be changed nowadays, I would prefer to differentiate between man and woman according to how they think. There are some biological reasons for this difference which are their brain structure and hormone production. According to some sort of balance theory from Taoism, these differences between man and woman make them always complement each other. This is what Erich Fromm said as dichotomy existence. It is the same as day and night, black and white, good and bad and many more.

In brain structure, the differences exist in corpus callosum, hypothalamus, lower paterial lobe and the nerve cells in hippocampus and paterial lobe. This structure differences cause the male and female to act differently in emosion, sexual behavior, talking, visualizing and ability to solve complex problem.

Sandra Witelson, in her research involving nine male brains and five female brains said that overall, the size of female brain is smaller than male. She also said that the corpus callosum (the “bridge” between left and right brain) is bigger in woman. Simon LeVay (1994) defended this fact after he found out that corpus callosum really is bigger in woman. In addition to that, he also said that a component called anterior comissure (nerve fibers that connect the two cerebral hemispheres) is also bigger in woman.

Let us go back in real life. Woman, in many cases, really love to tell stories about anything. What surprise me is their choices of words are far better than a man, and combine this with the tone and good intonation, you can feel their emotion in the stories. How about man? I’m quite sure that they can’t tell you stories the same as woman do.

Why is this happened? The answer is because of the transfer process between right and left brain is better in female. As I stated above, woman has bigger corpus callosum, and thus, contain more fibrous nerves involve in the transferring process. This is without a doubt, proves why woman likes to talk, especially in explaining academic things. Other than that, hypothalamus content, especially in medial preoptic, also is difference. This region, which control sexual behavior, is 2.5 to 3 times larger in male, explaining why male is always chasing for sex.
In terms of aging process, brain fibrous in male especially in temporal and frontal lobe, will first be to decline in function. These two parts are responsible in controlling how the male think and feel. Thus, changes in these brain parts will cause changes in how they think and feel. For female, their paterial lobes and hippocampus will be first to deteriorate as they grow older. During that time, they will lose their memories and also their spatial ability. We can see that older women usually forget where they put their keys, phone and also forget what they did yesterday.

The differences in the dimension and structure of the brain, is automatically differentiate between male and female in how they think and act. But this doesn’t mean anything in the academic performance. Although female has bigger corpus calosum then male, this doesn’t mean that the female is better in academic performance. This is because, all the differences in the brain structure will only results in different way of thinking and acting, as many research had done. Thus, when the theory of balances is put into account, these two different ways will have a great impact if they are combined together. These show why marriage is important to us.

"Sorry" - A Magic Word

First of all, I want to apologize for not updating this blog for the past few weeks. It is not because I don't want to update it, but I got busy with tests, assignments and some stuff. Speaking about apologizing, when I click on http://www.physorg.com/ yesterday, I saw a very good article. The title of that article is "Saying Sorry Really Does Cost Nothing".

According to this article, a study carried out by the Nottingham School of Economics' Centre for Decision Research and Experimental Economics, stated that the apology really can influence the other party's behaviour. In their study, when the manufacturer delay the delivery, the response would be either "We are very sorry and want to apologize about this" or "As a goodwill gesture, we can offer you €5 if you would consider withdrawing your evaluation". And surprisingly, 45% of the customers withdrew their evaluation in light of apology, while only 23% agreed in return for compensation.

This statistic show us that if we are wrong and have make a mistake, don't forget to apologize and say that you're sorry. Besides, it is only a word to say, and you could loss nothing if you say the word. For my personal opinion, I think that sorry is needed in certain situation but remember, some thing do not accept sorry as an answer. For example, in a matter of life and death, your mistake may cause someone's life and I don't think that people will just shut up after you say sorry to them. But really, if you make mistake, don't hesitate to say that you're sorry cause sorry may change the outcome of a situation. Thank you for reading this short post.

Rich People Don't Need Friends?

Below is an article that may help us reflect ourselves.

In 'The symbolic power of money: reminders of money alter social distress and physical pain' published in the journal , Xinyue Zhou, Kathleen Vohs and Roy Baumeister explored how money could reduce a person's feeling of pain and also negate their need for social popularity.
Harriet de Wit, Faculty Member for f1000 Medicine, said: "This research extends our understanding of relationships between social pain and physical pain, and remarkably, shows how acquired symbolic value of money, perhaps because of associations with power or control, can influence responses to both emotional and physical pain."
She also noted: "These findings have great importance for a social system such as ours that is characterized by wide disparities in financial wellbeing."
Zhou, Vohs and Baumeister determined that interpersonal rejection and physical pain caused desire for money to increase. They said: "Money can possibly substitute for social acceptance in conferring the ability to obtain benefits from the social system. Moreover, past work has suggested that responses to physical pain and social distress share common underlying mechanisms."
"Handling money (compared with handling paper) reduced distress over social exclusion and diminished the physical pain of immersion in hot water. Being reminded of having spent money, however, intensified both social distress and physical pain," the authors said

Mystery of Your Brain, Body And Soul

A mystery of the Soul and Spirit is a mystery throughout the history of humanity. Various points of view have been developed to understand the soul and spirit. But it never satisfied the researchers. Soul and spirit is always leaving something beyond our understanding. Now, we try to discuss the secret from the standpoint of a more holistic, hopefully complete the discourse so far. And, then make our perception of the spirit and the soul better. Though, of course, need further refinement. In this discussion, we try to discuss the soul and spirit in three comprehensive perspectives, which are information in the Qur'an, science, and philosophy. I would like to invite readers to further examine the information and analysis that comes from science about the existence of the Soul. For that, we will be much talk about the brain that is suspected role in the functioning of the Soul and Spirit.

1. STRUCTURE & FUNCTIONS OF THE BRAIN
There are suspicions that still need to be examined more deeply, that the soul was behind the structure of the human brain. Why is there such suspicion? Because of various clinical data observed by the psychiatrist or nerve, showing a very close connection between the quality of a soul with her brain quality. If the brain a person is medically impaired, or damaged, then we obtained the fact that people are also experiencing problems with their soul. For example, I have a friend who is experiencing some interference with the brain cells. Because of a motorcycle accident, he suffered damage to sense of smell. Since then, he never could smell anything through his nose. Rice soup scent for him is the same as Rawon rice or Timlo rice. He had complained to me, how unpleasant such interference was. At first glance, you may be wondering what to do with the soul. Actually the function of smell (the understanding of sense of smell) is part of the function of the Soul. Same goes to the eyes, ears and other senses. Because these five senses are a tool to communicate with the world outside one's body. If it is damaged, the quality of the soul is also disturbed. Examples are more obvious in the second case experienced by my family. One of my family members was affected by a stroke during a celebration of an event. Because he ate satay and other foods high in cholesterol, the stroke attacked him the very next morning. What happened after that? He suffered damage to the brain associated with the language. So since then, he could not remember the words that he has known since childhood. Whether the words are from Indonesians, Japanese, or English, he still could not remember the words perfectly. He knew, and familiar with an object, but could never mentioned its name. He was always wrong in giving name of any object. He also can’t even mention my name. And I know for sure, he still knew me. He also forgot the name of his wife and son, but he still knows them. If he tried to speak, the words that he said were not understandable at all. He was suffering psychologically, because of what he meant is not transmitted through language. I think, now you begin to feel what I mean. Damage to brain structures will give problems on the quality of one's soul. He's not crazy, just having some impaired in his soul quality. To overcome his problem, he was treated by several physicians; among them are medical doctor and neurologists. In the more severe cases, Schizophrenia aka crazy, the doctors had also found neurological damage in brain cells of the patient. There are parts of the brain responsible for emotion, shame, sadistic, uncontrolled behavior, and others that suffered serious damage. This can be seen with the release of certain chemicals inside the body. Treatment, it can be done physically by giving certain drugs that control the substances that initiated the 'madness'. Thus, we can see here that the disruption Soul is closely related to damage a person's brain structure. In the past, mental illnesses are treated only by psychiatrist but nowadays, it is treated by neurologist and psychiatrist. The neurologist deals with physical symptoms, whereas psychiatrist is more towards mental function, aka soul which is an abstract thingy. In medical science, mental illnesses is divided into two categories known as Structural (physical) and functional (psychological). To get a more concrete picture of brain structures in relation to mental function, let us examine the most important organ in the human head. The human brain is a soft tissue that weighed about 0.5 kilograms. It contains about 100 billion cells which are arranged in a highly sophisticated. These billions of cells that have complex functions act as the control center of human activity. Ranging from simply receiving the signals from various sensors in our bodies, until the process of comprehension, analysis, decision making, and then perform motor movements. Yes, in the brain is the center of human activity. All of our senses are controlled by the brain. If, brain cells associated with the senses is damaged, then the function of our senses will be impaired or it will not function normally. Vision function for example. Although our eyes are healthy, but if the cells of our vision centers located in the back of the brain skin damage, we also won’t be able to see, although our eyes are still open. Lens and retina are also still good. Nerves connecting the eye to the brain are also perfect. All of it becomes meaningless, when the visual cells in our brain are damaged. The entire vision process will be gone. The same goes to hearing process. Although the organ involve in hearing process, ear, eardrum, up to the 'cable' connecting to the central nerve of hearing is good, but if the cells in the hearing center (left side of the brain skin) is damaged, then it becomes useless. The sound is still captured by the ear, and then converted into electrical signals to the brain. But the brain cannot understand the voice, because the cells were damaged. The same goes to other function, if the center of the function which is in brain is damaged, the process couldn’t be carried out entirely. In addition to controlling the senses, and as a center of understanding, the brain also controls all movement of the body. Movement of hands, feet, head, and all the muscles or joints are controlled by the brain. The people who suffered a stroke, and then damaged in the movement control center, he will experience a seizure. Some also paralyzed either half or total paralysis, depending on the level of severity of the stroke. The series of limbic function is located at the front of the cortex. Going further, the brain is also a language center. Vocabulary, comprehension up to verbal process all is located in the brain. This language center occupies a vast territory in the human brain. Among areas that it controls include the tongue and hands. Both are related to language, ie speaking and writing. This shows that the human brain is designed by God to interact with the language. Such brain structure is not owned by another creature, besides humans. Language is very distinctive for human. Human civilization is shown by the language. People can write and convey the history of civilization with the language. Humans spawned great works also with the language. Humans can formulate science and technology with language. Language shows why human is the perfect creature on Earth. Furthermore, the brain also controls the functions to get a noble life. One of them is related to emotion. Pleasure, happiness, sadness, suffering, hate and love, all controlled by the emotional memory center in the brain called the amygdala. While memory center that is rational in the brain called the hippocampus. If brain is mapped according its region, then the human brain can be divided into three major sections. Region I, is the skin of the brain (cerebral cortex), the outermost portion of the brain. This area became the basis of the activities related to one's rational faculties. Starting from the ability to receive sensory stimuli, understand, analyze, and then respond to the motor. The greatness of human civilization in terms of science and technology, as it developed rapidly in recent centuries was the result of rational thinking brain from the skin. Humans can make a variety of electronic equipment, computers, robots, weapons of mass destruction, the spacecraft, and so forth, are only part of the brain power of shows by cerebral cortex. Region II, is the limbic system and other parts in the middle of the brain that is still very mysterious. This region is responsible for higher functions that are closely related to one's emotions. Be honest, fair, forgiving, love, hate, sadness, joy, and suffering is set by the mechanism in this region, the center of the brain. These include the amygdala in emotional memory center. There are several components of the brain involved in regulating these systems of 'higher functions'. Among these are Cingulata gyrus, thalamus, hippocampus, Nudeus Basal, prefrontal cortex, and amygdala. Three of them were located in the region I, the cortex is involved in rational activity. As for the rest, was in the bottom of the cortex, or parts that are associated with emotion. So the limbic system mechanism, involves two brain functions, rational functions in the cortex and emotional function in the deeper parts of the brain. That is, the emergence of compassion, justice, forgiveness, grudge, guilt, sadness and joy that not only purely emotional, but also involves the rational thoughts of us. The limbic system is also involves in the subconscious mind. In this system, universal memory of the good, bad, justice, honesty, and all properties that are considered good or bad by any humans are stored. Without learning all men can knew about the sense of sadness, happiness, love, suffering, and so forth. 'Memory' of all the universal feeling has been stored in this limbic system. Why do people laugh when they hear or see something funny? Or, why we become sad when we hear or see something sad? All this, was because of the universal memory stored in this limbic system. We do not need to learn about these universal senses. Human beings have collectively associated with higher functions as a human being in their middle part of the brain. No matter what language he was speaking or what nation someone was, he would be able to know if someone was crying because of sadness or happiness. He was laughing with pleasure or simply to cover his disappointment. It is the universal language of mankind. So in this limbic system that God has inspired a sense of sadness and joy, of courage and fear, a sense of satisfaction and disappointment, a sense of peaceful and restless, feeling proud and humble, happy and miserable, and various values of good and evil. These values system is the references or benchmarks for human to decide which one is good or bad. And then, a reference if something is happy or miserable. Next, based on the 'sense memory' in the limbic system, the orders came through the endocrine system (glandular hormones, enzymes, etc.) that affect all body organs like the heart beat faster or slower, cold sweat or not, trembling hands, and so on. We will discuss this more clearly in subsequent sections. While the region III, is associated with the basic functions of life. This region includes the brain stem and cerebellum. This is the center of heart rate regulation, respiration, blood pressure, including setting the balance and smooth motion which is to be carried out. In addition to the three global regions, I think we need to know some parts of the brain that has an important role in controlling a person's life.
Thalamus. This is part of the brain located at the front, controls the entry process information from outside the brain to the cortex. It also set the process of movement of the body organs through the coordination of the cerebral cortex and small brain. This section is where the crossing of sensory nerves that entering the brain occurred. Hypothalamus, located under the thalamus. It controls the stability of body temperature, hunger and thirst, sexual activities, and other agency activities, including the process of growth and menstruation in women which are controlled by hormones. Hippocampus. This is part of the brain that stored rational memories, especially the short term memories. Hippocampus shaped like the letter C, and is located in the middle of the brain. It was actually part of the cerebral cortex that extends inside the brain. Therefore, its function is closely related to rational processes at the cortex. However, the hippocampus also plays a role in the limbic system which is the center towards human noble function. This section provides a rational consideration to the functions of the human. Not just emotional like the one played by the amygdala. Neurotransmitters. These are chemicals in the brain that function to carry messages between nerve cells. These substances are produced in the nerve cells in the brain, when the messages from the brain must be transmitted to other parts. Almost all brain activity is using neurotransmitters to convey a message. In discussing the structure and function of this brain, we get a picture that the function of human life is controlled by the soft tissue inside the head. The brain is like the central government that controls all of the authority area. Ranging from dealing with information coming through the five senses, understand, analyze, make decisions, to respond through the movement of our limbs, all governed through the mechanism of the brain. In fact, feeling happy, sad, happy, loving, and the feelings of humanity, all is well and rises in the human brain. We then wondered whether the soul that we have are in the brain. Or the brain itself is called the soul? Why ask this? Because, as we have discussed before, that the damage to brain cells can cause a person to have troubled souls and even madness. Until here we have good reason to put such suspicions. To answer this question, let us further explore the brain function. Perhaps, by understanding the mechanisms of our work we will get a better picture of the brain function. And then get the answer to the question above: is it true soul in the brain? Or maybe it was behind the brain? Or, even the brain itself is called the Soul?

2. WORKING MECHANISM OF THE BRAIN
Human brain with all the nervous system does not form simultaneously. It grew up and gradually formed since from inside the mother's abdomen until we grow up. Brain and nervous system experienced continuous improvement. That is, the ability and maturity of the brain continues to progress with time and the growth of the human. Human begin with only 1 cell, which is called Stem Cell. From 1 cell which contains the characteristics of its parents, it progress towards the formation of a complicated human which is truly remarkable. One cell divides into 2 cells, then 4 cells, 8 cells and so on until the billions of human body cells. And the amazing thing is, from one cell and then develops into cells of different shapes and functions. There are cells that divide and develop into the formation of the head. There are cells that form the body and limbs. There are cells that form bones with various shape and functions. There are cells that develop to form muscle, blood, heart, lungs, kidneys, eyes, brain, and so forth. Very strange indeed! Where the orders to develop into different cells did came from? Do you see the difference between red blood cells and bone cells, or the skin cells and brain cells? Of course, immediately we can tell the difference. Yes, that various kinds of cells are very different in form and function. Why can it happen so, that one cell can develop into cells of different and then 'magically' form a network, then the organs of different shapes and functions? Who’s the one responsible for all that? Is not human being is not completely form yet, and still is the 'embryo' that does not have any awareness or willingness? Surely it cannot govern the cells to divide and form the organs themselves. It turned out that in the Stem Cell there is a very sophisticated program that gives orders to the cells to divide and form a network and the internal organs of human body. We will discuss this in the next section. On this occasion I just wanted to inform you that the nervous system and the human brain are estimated to form before the 18th day of fetal development in the mother's abdomen. From then until the day of birth, the nervous system and the human brain develop at an extraordinary speed. Every minute of it, nerve cells in the fetal brain were increased about 25,000 cells. And so it went on until the eve of its birth. A baby's brain cells had reached approximately 100 billion nerve cells! In addition to neural cells, the brain also contains supporting cells, which amounted to twice of that, approximately 200 billion cells called glia. Nerve cells function to receive a variety of messages, process them, and response to the messages. While glia cells function is to support the smooth functioning and security of the processes that occur in nerve cells. So in about 9 months the development process of brain nervous system and the supporting cells involving approximately 300 billion cells has occurred. And, amazingly, the nerve cells form a circuit which is very complicated and complex but later on it becomes the control center of human life. This is millions of times more complex and sophisticated than this century's greatest computer. The circuits then form an interconnected network that base on its function and cannot be separated. Damage to one cell alone will cause major problems in the brain function, because the nerve cells of the brain cannot be replaced again not as the other systems. However, brain development is not stopped at the time the baby is born. Because the birth is merely the time where the nervous system start functioning. And then continue its progress towards perfection until adulthood. It was the fastest growth in the fetal growth period until early childhood. After that, though it still growing, but with slow speed, along with age. After the formation of the fetus in the womb, childhood is the most critical period in the formation of the nervous system of the human brain. Children who are born with defective eyesight, for example, obviously their nerve cells associated with the vision do not develop. The cells in the retina of the eye are growing rapidly after the baby is born into the world. If the baby after birth, closed her eyes and cannot be seen until some time, then the cells in the retina of his eye would not form, and the nerve cells associated with this will became smaller, and eventually do not work. The front part of the brain responsible for the intelligence of children is growing rapidly at the age of 6 - 12 months. If the nerve cells in this region are well developed, then the child will have a high intelligence, emotional maturity, mastering the language well, and has good skills. Language area in the brain of children also experienced stabilization at around 8th months. The nervous system is formed with a very characteristic, along with the development of a brain region called the prefrontal cortex. This area is closely connected with the concept of self-awareness and a person. At the age of 8, children experience stabilization or balance of right brain functions and left. The two hemispheres of the brain have a different mechanism in the thinking. The right brain tends to think intuitively and artistically. While the left brain to think logically, rationally and analytically. Learning mathematics, for example, need more use of the left brain. Learning sciences and grammar also use the left brain. While learning the art of music, dance art, fantasy and the like are using the right brain mechanisms. If the two hemispheres function in a balanced way, then the child will have the potential to mature intelligence, intellectually and emotionally. This consolidation is happening at the age of 8. In the fetus, infant, until the children, nerve cells will be formed and placed at the right position in both hemispheres. Either the relationship between nerve cells or its circuits, it’s all in their right position. If there is an error occurs during the placement and the brain neural circuit formation, there will be severe damage in the brain's nervous system and makes the brain does not function properly, because their circuit does not form. But, if the formation of the circuit walks right, then the nerve cells will only need to focus on its growth later on. Nervous system reliability is determined by the size of nerve cells. The big cell, long tail, and large circuits, result in better function. On the other hand, if the cell is small, short tail and narrow circuits, the function will not be good. Example of this case is the vision cells in the newborn babies as I demonstrated above. Part of the brain called the amygdala, which is responsible for emotional memory, is well developed at the age of 3. So the children who are not emotionally well formed at that age usually will have the emotional maturity problems in adulthood. In the meantime, the rational mind in the children only develop after they’ve reach 3 years old. That is why learning should be from emotional to rational. In accordance with the part of the brain that have been developed. After that, nerve cells are still growing until it reaches adulthood. Each of our new skills, both in terms of language, mathematics, and physical skills, the nerve cells of our brain that controls related to skills will develop, grow thicker, and form new circuits. So, our brains become larger and larger, and many times over the surface. The more folds in the brain of a person, then it show that he's more intelligent. The brain controls all activities of human life in three ways, namely signals via electrical signals of nerve fibers, chemicals called neurotransmitters, and hormones which are released into the blood. On these three things human function rests. Damage in one of the three things will cause chaos or even paralysis on human activity. Electrical signal is the fastest way owned by the brain and neural circuits. Each gave orders to the organs or other parts; the brain is always sending messages via this electrical signals. Like pulses in a phone. Or, like a television remote control, but through 'cable' nerves. The speed of the messages from the brain to the organs is very high, 120 meters per second. So if you have height of 160 cm, the speed of messages from the brain to the tip of your foot takes only about 1 / 75 seconds. Therefore, your feet can move instantly, right after your brain wish. This allows you to kick the ball without failure in a football game. Imagine if your response is not that fast, then a football player will be going back and forth just to kick a ball that he misses. Or, maybe a keeper will always fail to catch the ball which led to the goal. The response speed is determined by the quality of 'cable' and the circuit system, which connects the brain as a control center in organs throughout the body. That is how nervous system works. If the circuit system is bad, or the nerve structure is defective, then the speed of command will also be affected. Or even experience some congestion. Similarly, if the cable is low in quality, the response speed will also decrease. One of the peculiarities of the nervous system is the quality of the cord. Usually, in order to increase the speed of electrical signals, the cable is chosen from a good metal, say copper, or platinum with a high-power of electrical transmission. But in this nervous system, 'cable' is chosen from the insulating material, which consists of fat, protein and water. Those are the material for nerve fibers of humans. However, it process of transmitting the electrical signal is very efficient. Even much better than metal conductors that we know. If the metals are used as a cable conductor, the losses will surely occur. At a certain distance the signal quality will drop. And booster is needed to increase the signal strength. But what happens to nerve fibers is so amazing. The cells along the nerve fibers act as a booster, causing the electrical signal to experience almost no losses. Thus, the message will reach the destination perfectly and no message is loss because the electrical signal is constant throughout the journey. Maybe people need to investigate this neural system further, to create a sophisticated and advanced telecommunications system. Do not use metal materials and booster, but imitate the cells and boosters in the nervous system. A latest development in communications technology is to use fiber optics that is far better than the conductor material. But I think, it still loses to the nervous system in the human body. Electrical signal transmission system in the nervous system is better, when the nerve fibers, widening, has long tail, and its myelin (nerve wrapping materials) is thicker. A bit strange indeed, a thick myelin nerves only speed up the electrical signals. The signals can vibrate even more quickly. And contrary, in the place where myelin nerves are low, the electric signals also is low. Therefore, to determine whether a person’s nervous system is good or not, we can simply observing the thickness of the nerve cells and myelin, as well as the number of nerves forming the circuit. The thicker nerve cells and myelin, as well as many cells added, and the vast circuit, the nervous system will be amazingly great. Nerve cells were like plastic that can be stretched if it is used, the nerve cells will enlarge, thickened and elongated. But if it was never used, the nerve cells we will be smaller, thinner, and then disappeared. So we just choose, whether we always use it to move, and the more intelligent and competent we will be, or we never use it, and then the cells would disappear, and we become a bunch of fools! In addition to passing electrical signals, the brain also give orders using neurotransmitters. This is the chemical messenger. This neurotransmitter is produced at the end of every nerve cell (dendrite) as the brain's electrical signals pass through. Neurotransmitter is then released into the cells next to it, accepted by another substance, called receptor (receiver). If the neurotransmitter fit with the receptors, then the message flow process will continue until the target organ. Many types of neurotransmitters have been identified by many researchers. However, the neurotransmitters are roughly grouped into 3 major groups, namely: (1). groups of amino acids such as GABA and glutamate, (2) Biogenic groups Amin, like dopamine, ad renalin, and noradrenaline, (3) groups such as nitric oxide peptides. Each neurotransmitter plays a different role in the brain in order to convey the message to the organs. For example, when you're anxious or angry, then you will be in a cold sweat, your heart beat faster, and sometimes body felt weak. This is the effect of the release of adrenaline on the orders of the brain. Adrenaline also called epinephrine. Or if you're happy, then the happy feeling is triggered by the release of a neurotransmitter called enkefalin. If, you are able to move deftly, then your brain is decreasing the neurotransmitter GABA. The numbers will be down. Conversely, if the number of GABA is increasing, then the person becomes lazy. For people who lost their mood, less power concentration, their neurotransmitters called serotonin are decreasing. Someone could experience the madness which is caused by norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine where these neurotransmitters are working on cognitive systems, the coordinate system of muscle movement, and the vigilance of someone. Thus, we see how important the role of neurotransmitters in a person's life. It is one of the main actors in the system of human life, along with electrical signals in nerve fibers and hormones. Yes, the hormone is the third actor in the delivery of messages from the brain to the body. If the electrical signals and neurotransmitters work along the nerve, the hormone is released through the blood. This substance is released by a hipofise gland, located in front of the brain and by the Hypothalamus order. When people are angry or worried, hormones played a role in it. When you worry too much, then the limbic system in your brain will quickly ordered Hypothalamus to release hormone CRF (Corticotrophin Releasing Factor). CRF is then slid toward the bottom hipofise in Hypothalamus, and fishing out another hormone, ACTH (Adrenocorticotrophin Hormone). ACTH was then entered into the bloodstream, and then to the kidneys child glands. There ACTH Cortisol hormone which triggered the sympathetic nervous adrenaline. During this moment, your heart will beat faster, cold sweat is coming out, shivering and sometimes you’ll feel like you’re going to pee. Cortisol also will affect other organs; one of them is Hippocampus which acts as your rational memory. If that happen, then you will experience anxiety or nervous, and you will lose your memory for an instant. Even if it is something you remember will be clearly can be whipped out by cortisol at this time. Other than that, hunger and thirst also is also controlled by this hipofise gland. The same goes to digestion system, also controlled by the hormones system. This hormone system is also known to be related with how you control yourself. For example, if someone feels too much anxiety, he or she may experience stomach ache all of sudden. Hormone system also regulates the sexual mechanism such as the production of sperms in male and also the menstrual cycle in female. Now we know very well about the process occurs in the brain and how the brain control the human body. The brain controls all the human function by using 3 means, electrical signal, neurotransmitter and hormones. Now the questions is do you feel that the soul is closely related with the brain function? Or is it vice versa? Or you are not sure which one? To get a deeper understanding about this, let us together search and discuss about this in many views. Because by searching and discussing, our understanding about this will increase. By then, I end this discussion here. Thank you for reading this very long post.

Tetris and Brain Efficiency

I just finished reviewing my favourite website, http://www.physorg.com/ and I found this interesting articles about Tetris. Below is the article that I retrieved from that website.

Is Tetris good for the brain?

Researchers from Mind Research Network in Albuquerque used brain imaging and Tetris to investigate whether practice makes the brain efficient because it increases gray matter. For 30 minutes a day over a three-month period, 26 adolescent girls played Tetris, a computer game requiring a combination of cognitive skills. The girls completed both structural and functional MRI scans before and after the three-month practice period, as did girls in the control group who did not play Tetris. A structural MRI was used to assess cortical thickness, and a functional MRI was used to assess efficient activity.
The girls who practiced showed greater brain efficiency, consistent with earlier studies. Compared to controls, the girls that practiced also had a thicker cortex, but not in the same brain areas where efficiency occurred.
The areas of the brain that showed relatively thicker cortex were the Brodmann Area (BA) 6 in the left frontal lobe and BA 22 and BA 38 in the left temporal lobe. Scientists believe BA 6 plays a role in the planning of complex, coordinated movements. BA 22 and BA 38 are believed to be the part of the brain active in multisensory integration—or our brain’s coordination of visual, tactile, auditory, and internal physiological information. Functional MRI (fMRI) showed greater efficiency after practice mostly in the right frontal and parietal lobes including BAs 32, 6, 8, 9, 46 and BA 40. These areas are associated with critical thinking, reasoning, and language and processing.
“One of the most surprising findings of brain research in the last five years was that juggling practice increased gray matter in the motor areas of the brain,” said Dr. Rex Jung, a co-investigator on the Tetris study and a clinical neuropsychologist. “We did our Tetris study to see if mental practice increased cortical thickness, a sign of more gray matter. If it did, it could be an explanation for why previous studies have shown that mental practice increases brain efficiency. More gray matter in an area could mean that the area would not need to work as hard during Tetris play.”
“We were excited to see cortical thickness differences between the girls that practiced Tetris and those that did not,” said Dr. Richard Haier, a co-investigator in the study and lead author of a 1992 study that found practicing Tetris led to greater brain efficiency. “But, it was surprising that these changes were not where we saw more efficiency. How a thicker cortex and increased brain efficiency are related remains a mystery.”
The researchers hope to continue this work with larger, more diverse samples to investigate whether the brain changes we measured revert back when subjects stop playing Tetris. Similarly, they are interested if the skills learned in Tetris, and the associated brain changes, transfer to other cognitive areas such as working memory, processing speed, or spatial reasoning.

More information: MRI assessment of cortical thickness and functional activity changes in adolescent girls following three months of practice on a visual-spatial task; Richard J Haier, Sherif Karama, Leonard Leyba and Rex E Jung; BMC Research Notes 2009, 2:174;

If for instance Tetris is proved to increase the brain efficiency, would that mean playing Tetris can help us to be an intelligent person? And help us with our study? I just hope it would because playing tetris is a lot easier than studying all the things that i can't even remember although I just look at that word a few seconds ago. Anyway, this would be further discuss by the researchers and not us. Thank you for reading this post.

Aku: Ye la..tp cite dy lbey menunjukkn tntg perguruan 2 drpd cinta...

Zayyinul dtg n menukar topik kitorang......

Berdasarkan cerita diatas, kita boleh melihat tiga benda. Yang pertama, "Errors In Thinking".

Learning A Second Language

Teaching young children how to speak a second language is good for their minds, report two Cornell linguistic researchers.

Learning a second language does not cause language confusion, language delay or cognitive deficit, which have been concerns in the past. In fact, according to studies at the Cornell Language Acquisition Lab (CLAL), children who learn a second language can maintain attention despite outside stimuli better than children who know only one language.
That's important, say Barbara Lust, a developmental psychology and linguistics expert, professor of human development and director of CLAL, and her collaborator, Sujin Yang, former postdoctoral research associate at the lab, because that ability is "responsible for selective and conscious cognitive processes to achieve goals in the face of distraction and plays a key role in academic readiness and success in school settings."
In other words, "Cognitive advantages follow from becoming bilingual," Lust says. "These cognitive advantages can contribute to a child's future academic success."
The most effective way to learn a second language, they say, is to put the young child in situations where the second language surrounds them. "We find that children learning a second language in an immersion setting show an overall success rate of grammatical knowledge similar to English monolinguals," says Yang, now a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto at Scarborough and at York University in Toronto.
And the earlier that a child learns a second language, they say, the more likely the child will more quickly attain nativelike language proficiency.
Lust has been exploring language acquisition in young children for more than 30 years, across more than 20 different languages and cultures, studying which aspects of language acquisition are biologically endowed and which are learned, when and how language acquisition begins and how multiple language acquisition affects cognitive development in children.
"One of the greatest feats of human development is learning language," says Lust. It's remarkable, she says, "how well equipped children are, beginning at birth, to accomplish the complex task of learning language."

For five years, Lust has been exploring the effects of bilingualism in young children with Yang, who led a series of studies with children of 3 to 6 years of age and comparison adults. The two have co-authored several papers.
"This collection of multilingualism projects, along with many research results from other labs across the world, affirms that children can learn more than one language, and they will even do so naturally if surrounded by the languages. The mystery of first-language acquisition is intensified when we realize that a child can and does naturally acquire more than one language at once," says Lust, a founding member of the National Science Foundation-funded Virtual Center for the study of Language Acquisition (VCLA), which integrates research findings from such diverse fields as linguistics, developmental and experimental psychology, and neuroscience from around the country and the world.
In the CLAL, in conjunction with the VCLA and with Yang, Lust and her colleagues are also looking at longitudinal case studies of several young children acquiring English for the first time at 3 years of age through immersion in local nursery schools.

Tips to teach a child a second language
• Surround the child with more than one language through conversations and social groups using different languages; the earlier the better.
• Maintain home (heritage) language when a second language is being learned outside the home. • Expose children to multilingual settings and give them plenty of opportunities to play with children who speak the second language. • Provide fun and interactive language-learning environments (e.g., music, dance and film) in both languages, and often with children of similar age.
• Promote reading and storytelling in multiple languages.
• Maintain a positive attitude toward languages and cultures children learn.
